Automated Meter Reading Systems have delivered on the promise of reducing estimated bills and overall meter reading costs, resulting in increased cash flows and lower operating costs for water utilities nationwide. The Elster AMCO Water evolution mobile AMR and fixed network AMI are the most cost-effective and efficient solutions for automating the collection of meter readings and for detecting leaks and tampering in your system. Choose from evolution mobile AMR or fixed network AMI systems. Mobile systems offer a relatively simple solution and are an easy “jumping on” point to this technology. The more advanced fixed network systems offer the ultimate flexibility to adapt to any indoor, outdoor, rural or urban scenario, with higher levels of efficiency. They ensure the on-demand delivery on time-critical data. What’s great about the Elster AMCO systems is, if you choose the more entry-level mobile AMR system, it’s fully upgradeable to the AMI system at a later date, securing your utility’s investment in the future.

Both systems revolve around the evolution Radio Transceiver—the evoRTM. This innovative transceiver collects and analyzes data directly from the water meter register. You can install it some distance from the meter using a 3-conductor cable, or in a pit with the meter using the pit-mount interface. For new installations, you can even purchase it with the water meter as a single unit. Once installed, the evoRTM reads data, trouble codes, leak detection and, in some case, backflow data.

Collect your data using either the evoWalk Mobile Collector handheld unit, or, for faster collection, the evoDrive Mobile Collector notebook PC, which lets you drive through your route, automatically compiling your data. The PC is Bluetooth-connected to a GPS system that keeps track of your geographic position, and ensures that all meters in the area have been read. Both collectors use the evoLink Route Manager software to transmit data to your billing system. This software generates a wide range of reports, letting you easily view data and system trouble.

For a fully automated solution, Elster AMCO Water’s evolution Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system is a fixed network running a web-based application on a Ground Server, and an evoNet Manager Server that handles two-way communication via the evoGate gateway, or Central Collector. This gateway collects metering data from all the evoRTM transceivers in the network. The transceivers each relay through another evoRTM; this is called a “Hop”. The system allows four hops to get to the Central Collector. For greater distances, evoHop Range Extenders can be used as automatic data relays. The two-way network lets you acquire readings on demand, and receive data on leaks, tampering, low battery conditions and reverse flow or backflow. It can even control electronic valves (evoValve) to remotely turn water on or off. Because the system is a deterministic, or modified mesh network, it knows exactly where to go to acquire data, unlike full mesh networks where devices just blindly transmit data. This, coupled with the fact that the system configures itself to optimize the number of hops and connections between evoRTM endpoints, results in long battery life throughout your network.

The AMI system stores and manages its data through the evoNet Manager Server. The Oracle- and MySQL-compatible databases feature a wide range of standard reports, including consumption (high/low; negative or zero); tampering or misreading; leak detection; unassigned transceivers; and much more. The AMI system also includes the evoWalk handheld device that’s used in the AMR system. It can be used if two-way communication is lost, and to repair or replace evoRTM transceivers in the field.
