M1 steel is given a blast of pure oxygen during the molding process to eliminate carbon deposits and allow the mold to fill with pure steel. This reduces the microscopic fissures and irregularities that are often associated with F1 tool steel, commonly used for drill taps. It also eliminates weak points in the tap's strength and hardness. A nitride coating protects steel against rust.
