Frequently Asked Questions - Pipe
  • I need to connect several pieces of 4" pipe with different outside diameters, some of which are non-standard. What is the best kind of coupling to use?
    View answer
    • We can supply wide range bolted compression couplings that eliminate the need to order transition couplings with different combinations of glands and gaskets. Instead of multiple couplings, you would only need one.
  • I need to purchase a repair clamp but I am not sure what size pipe I have. How can I figure out what my Outside Diameter is?
    View answer
    • We have Diameter Tape Measures where you would just wrap the tape around the outside of the pipe and read the diameter. If you don’t have a Diameter Tape Measure you can also use a regular tape measure to measure the outside of the pipe (the circumference) and divide that number by 3.14 (pi) to obtain the Outside Diameter. (Circumference/pi = Outside Diameter)
  • I have a small leak in my pipe. Can I repair it or do I have to replace the pipe?
    View answer
    • In most cases the pipe can be repaired. We offer repair clamps, which use a gasket to clamp over the leak and stop the flow. We also offer different types of Pipe Repair Kits which are economical, easy to use and very effective.
  • Do I have to use a tapping machine to tap into PVC pipe?
    View answer
    • We offer a Fasttap Self-Tapping Service Saddle, which eliminates the need for saddles, corp stops and tapping machines. The Fasttap Self-Tapping Service Saddles have a built in cutter, which retains the coupon and then functions as a cut-off valve.
  • I was looking at the Service Saddles and noticed that some of them have an “NPT” tap and some have a “CC” tap. What is the difference?
    View answer
    • NPT, or National Pipe Thread, is a U.S. standard for tapered threads used to join pipes and fittings. CC, or Corp Cock thread or AWWA thread, has a larger diameter and steeper taper for greater strength under pressure. CC thread is the most common thread on Corporation Stops. The two threads are not interchangeable. Whatever threading is on the Corporation Stop you are going to use is the outlet type you should purchase.
  • I work with different types of pipe material and sometimes need to make repairs or replace sections of the pipe. Can USABlueBook help me?
    View answer
    • We offer many types of pipe, fittings and tools to help you in almost any job. We can supply PVC and Copper Pipe in packs small enough to ship overnight for those time sensitive jobs. PVC, copper, CPVC, stainless steel, brass and galvanized fittings are also available. Don’t forget cutters, shut-off tools, crimpers, primer, cement, soldering torches and many other accessories for all of your piping needs.
  • I need an Expansion Joint for my piping system. What is the difference between open arch and filled arch?
    View answer
    • Open arch expansion joints have a single open arch in the middle of the expansion joint for maximum flexibility. Filled arch expansion joints have that same arch but it is filled to minimize friction loss. It also helps to keep solids from building up or getting stuck inside the arch so it is great for wastewater applications.
