Hits are bound to happen when digging around underground utilities, even when extra care is taken. The costly effects of these hits then become the responsibility of the party at fault. HIT Kits help you document the damage and its relationship to existing location markers so you can defend yourself against damage claims. Let's face it, after-the-fact finger pointing generally doesn't resolve the issue.
Always document your hit as soon as possible. Place one post on the existing mark, one post over the actual damage, and the three-foot ruler between the two markers to indicate the distance. Then photograph the hit site for visual documentation. Large lettering on the marking posts and ruler show up well when photographed. Filling posts with sand ensures additional stability in windy conditions.
Standard HIT kit includes: (1) "Mark" post, (1) "Damage" post, (1) 36" ruler, (2) stands, (2) anchoring spikes and (1) storage bag. Note: Marking accuracy varies from state to state, but tolerances are generally within a few feet.
